ˈempəTHē/
noun
- the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
According to some studies empathy is on the decline among young people. Recent "research, led by Sara H. Konrath of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and published online in August in Personality and Social Psychology Review, found that college students’ self-reported empathy has declined since 1980, with an especially steep drop in the past 10 years."

So, I have a friend who had being going through depression. We'll call them R. R is my best friend. We've always had this amazing chemistry which led to our amazing friendship. R was depressed because of events that had happened in R's childhood. R was suicidal at times. I tried to help R the best way I could. I would talk to R and listen to R. I promised R to always be there for her and that I was going to be right by her side when she overcame her depression. Fast forward to a few months, R is now very happy. She goes to a therapist every week and is happier than ever. I like to think I helped her through it. Empathy is important because without it we as humans would never experience love.
ReplyDeleteThe video is about a boy who is from a small town going to a large high school. He was bullied because his father died and he had pictures of him in his locker. When he gets to his new school he starts to open the doors and hold them for everyone. The kids at his new school appreciate what he is doing and soon, he starts making friends. It is a very touching story because coming from a school with bullies is a bad experience, and he finds people who really appreciate him. Empathy is important because it is a symbol of love and kindness and without it the world would never prosper.
ReplyDeleteThe video I watched was about a boy from a small town going to a large city school. He "opened doors" for others. He lost his father while attending high school. He had pictures of him in his locker, but bullies had pulled them down and bulled him for it. He then attended a new school in hopes to be a normal kid. He would hold doors open for people and greet them as they walked by. For doing such a small act, he was know for it. Through this video I have learned that through small acts of kindness you can make a big change in others lives. Empathy is important because without it the world would be cruel.

ReplyDeleteThe video is about a boy who was bullied at his school because of his father's death. His mother decides to send him to a city school and that changed his life. He started fresh putting his old life behind him and opening doors for people. This may seem like a simple act of kindness but people started noticing him and this inspired them to also do acts of kindness. Its amazing how something as simple as opening doors can change someone's life forever. This video did move me because its amazing how something as simple as opening doors can change someone's life forever. Not only did his life change but also the students at his school. When he opened the door everyday it gave them a reason to smile everyday and to look forward for the days to come. Empathy is very important to me. Empathy is hope. Without empathy you feel like you're alone and no one's there to help you and no one care's about you. When someone shows empathy it makes it all better.
I watched a video and read an article about a young boy who suffers from autism that is just starting middle school. His mom is heartbroken for him because every day he goes to school and during lunch always ends up sitting by himself. One day she gets a picture from a faculty member showing a college football player sitting having a nice conversation with her son during lunch. The act of kindness touched her heart and she reached out on Facebook thanking the kind man for sitting with her son and keeping him company. This example moved me because it showed me that such a simple thing as sitting with someone at lunch can make their day and change a life for the better. This story has inspired me to be more kind and helped me to realize that even the small things we do for others in life matter. Empathy is important because without it people would feel like they are alone and it would be much harder to overcome the many challenges we face in life.
ReplyDeleteI read a website that explained empathy and why it is so important to have it.It talked about young people not learning about it and why they needed to know it. Also, it gave ideas about how to prepare young people and how to expand the amount of empathy a person can have. ReplyDeleteI looked at the video of the FSU football player that sat with the autistic kid. The mom of the kid with autism was worried about her son would have no one to sit with in lunch. When some of the players from the FSU football team visited the school one of the players sat with the autistic kid. The player said he didn't even notice he was autistic. This story was really touching. It moved so many people and went viral on Facebook. This video showed me to have more empathy and just be more thoughtful of other people. I think many people including myself need to less selfish and realized how blessed we all are.
ReplyDeleteI have seen people be rude to the elderly, by telling them to hurry up when crossing the street, not holding the door etc. I was once with my grandmother, she was in her wheel chair during the time, 3 weeks out of the hospital. She was getting up to hold the door and I was behind her holding the chair so it wouldn't move. This young man ( 16-18)yrs was right in front. If he was a considerate person he would of held the door so my grandmother wouldn't have to do it. I wAs upset because it was rude how he didn't hold the door and walked right though. I understand how my grandmother felt because some one has done that to me. I think sometimes people care about themselves to much and do not feel any empathy for those who are not able to do the things that they can do or those who need help. Another scenario is when an a disabled person is crossing the street and people had the urge to honk at them to tell them to move faster. I've seen someone kindly get out of the car and help the person cross the street. We need more considerable people in this world to help those who need help.
ReplyDeleteThe video was about this boy named Josh, and how he was bullied relentlessly in his old school for keeping pictures of his dead father in his locker. When his mom transferred to a new city school, he tried to get to know people and be noticed by holding doors open for people everyday. By doing this, everybody started to notice him and learn to follow his example of kindness. Later on, Josh becomes a public speaker and talked to younger kids about his experiences. He has empathy towards the bullied kids, since he had gone through that experience. This moved me because its crazy how a small act can make people be empathetic towards what they're classmates are going through or at least to get to know each other more. Empathy is important to me because its important to not always get self-absorbed in your own problems all the time, but to realize other people have problems too.

ReplyDeleteOn this website, it gives a story of a vet who was trying to be empathetic with her patient and her patient does not accept it. It tells how empathy usually comes from emotional instability and how people feel. Empathy is an important part of our lives because it lets others know that they aren't alone and they don't need to be alone. Without empathy, more people would be selfish and more people would have to suffer in silence.
One of my friends did bad on a test and felt sad because they knew they could have done better. I knew they were right, I felt bad for them but I knew they would do better next time. Empathy is when you understand how people are feeling and you care for them.
ReplyDeleteMy cousin don't have a lot of money, but he does have a big heart. He once saw a homeless man with a child, and he did something great. He gave the man some money, food, and directed him to a homeless shelter. He even bought the child a toy. My cousin could have just turned the other cheek to the man, he could have completely ignored him. Yet he didn't. Empathy is a strong emotion, and it's important. It's important because it helps us care for others. Without empathy, we would neither do good things to others, nor would we care for others.
ReplyDeleteMany people have shown empathy to me and my family when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Empathy is important because it connects us to other people who might help you, and it makes them want to help some one or something with a cause.
