Digital Literacy Continued

This is a continuation of our previous post regarding information literacy. Websites and news organizations make money from advertising when we view their content. There are three important distinctions for you to know:
  1. Native Advertising - advertising that tries to sell or promote a product disguised as a news story
  2. Traditional Advertising - most common advertising that sells or promotes a product 
  3. News story - real content containing factual information about a subject and independent of bias and should answer, who, what, when and how
For this post take a look at the following two website banners and answer this question:





Which are these an example of: native advertising, traditional advertising or a news story and why?

  1. Both website banners are news stories. They both have real, factual content that share a who, what, where, and why.

  3. The first one is a new story because it is about something that is going on and is true. The second one however is Native Advertising because it say sponsored content on it, which means that there will be ads.

  4. I think both advertisements are news stories. They both have factual information supporting their topic and asking the 4 questions of who, what, when, and how.

  5. i think both advertisements are news stories. Both advertisement's have information that explain why a certain issue is uprising. The first one is talking about California trying to stop selling almonds. The second news story is talking about why women don't use technology.

  6. I believe the first ad is a news story and the second ad is Native Advertising. The first ad is only trying to show information about almonds. The second one has factual information; however, it does say it is sponsored content.

  7. I believe that both ads are examples of traditional advertising. They are both trying to sell products, the first one with the almonds, and the second ad with a program.

  8. I think the first one is a news story; it does not contain any advertisement or product placement in it. The second one is native advertising; it is sponsored content and will advertise a product during the story.

  9. I think that both of the advertisements are examples of news story advertisements. Both banners are trying to advertise their products while showing facts.

  10. i think that both ads are news stories. they are both giving information and questions of who what where and why. but the second one is more muddled because of the fact it says sponsored content, which could possibly make it naive advertising.

  15. I believe both of these ads are news stories because they use factual information to promote the selling of almonds and for women to go into the science field of work. News stories use factual information to promote a certain topic or product and these ads are an example of that.
