I chose this particular TED video because of the name. I couldn't get it out of my head. What I discovered was extremelly interesting. This man's daughter found a plastic container in a stream, and knew that it wasn't supposed to be there. The father looked around, searching for more litter, and posting pictures of it on Instagram. He founded an app and millions of people all over the world caught on.

    1. I also think the video is interesting. The fact that it all started with a popular app to collect litter seems very cool . Not only does this idea help reduce litter, but it helps build a community. Like he said in the video, "Each video tells a story". This is different from anything I've seen and is a great idea.

This TED Video is about a French-Tunisian artist, eL Seed. eL Seed uses a combination of graffiti and calligraphy to spread messages about love, hope and peace in Arabic. He often uses quotes or poetry to spread his message. I chose this TED video because of the title of the video, "eL Seed: Street art with a message of hope and peace". The title intrigued me. I have always been fascinated with graffiti and calligraphy, so to see them being combined to spread a message about unity is truly beautiful. I believe my classmates should watch it because this video shows that one can advocate for their beliefs in many different and creative ways.

    1. I agree. The artist used something as simple as graffiti and calligraphy to express his thoughts. Which was spread into a powerful message shared with others. The mystery is in the message. Although the language of his work is Arabic, the art of it is universal. I believe he allows the viewer to have their own special opinion on his works. I also like that his pieces are made large and with bright colors for everyone to see everywhere.

  3. https://www.ted.com/talks/lidia_yuknavitch_the_beauty_of_being_a_misfit

This TED video was about a woman, Linda Yuknavitch, who calls herself a "misfit". Through the video she explains all the things that have gone wrong in her life, and all the problems she's faced. She explains how one day she got a letter in the mail saying she had won a prize for a short story she had written. She talks about the prize as a three day trip, where she got to meet 3 famous writers. She says that people like her ,"misfits", don't know how to hope, say yes, or chose the big dream even when it's in front of you. She traveled back home with just memories of what had happened,"memory was the only prize she had allowed herself". I chose this video because I saw the title of misfit. When I think of the word misfit, I think of the song in the animation Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. I encourage my classmates to watch this video because the author carries the idea that even if you are a misfit you aren't alone in the world.

  4. https://www.ted.com/talks/keller_rinaudo_a_mini_robot_powered_by_your_phone#t-334636

In this TED video, Keller Rinaudo, the co-founder of Romotive, explains to us how him and his team have created a small and cute robot. He explains how the robot should be "friendly and cute", instead of being huge and scary-looking. They were smart and used something that everyone loves using; their smartphones. Using an IPhone, you can connect it to Romo, and the robot is awoken. It is able to follow your face using the camera, which I think is pretty cool. The robot acts like a pet, but less needy and annoying, yet it's still cute. But what is definitely cool about this robot, is that you can connect it to other devices. On that device, you can see what the robot sees. You can also control the robot on that device as well. This robot is like a cute pet, that can still interact with you, as well as act as a toy and a communicating device.

  5. https://www.ted.com/talks/anthony_goldbloom_the_jobs_we_ll_lose_to_machines_and_the_ones_we_won_t

My video is about how humans may soon loose their jobs to machines. Machines have been able to grade essays and identify diseases. One thing that humans can do but machines cannot do is solve problems that we have never been exposed to. A machine needs to be exposed to something many times. For example, if a human has a problem they can solve the problem by inventing something new while a machine cannot. I chose to watch it because I am personally worried that robots will take over the world and there won't be any humans left. It is nice to know that robots won't take over the world. I recommend to watch it because even though it is a short video, it gives a lot of information about machines and what they are able to do.

    1. I think that this video is interesting because it explains what our reliance of technology can do. The man was right because humans have robots marking exams and diagnosing diseases when we are fully capable of doing so. If humans are not careful they can lose some of the most important jobs to robots. Although this is possible there is an exception and flaw in these machines. They are not able to handle things they haven't seen before and humans can. We can indeed keep most of our jobs if we are able to handle new situations. This video has taught me that even though machines are fast, they can't compare to the human mind.

  6. https://www.ted.com/talks/chinaka_hodge_what_will_you_tell_your_daughters_about_2016#t-220619

The video I chose is entitled, "What would you tell your daughters about 2016?" by Chinaka Hodge. It is a poem a woman wrote describing all of the good and bad things that happened in 2016. She talked about the many lives lost and the wars going on in the Middle East. She talked about the legends we lost and how the election caused problems among people and our nation as a whole. She talked about the most important thing to say to your daughter is that 2016 was the year of women, standing up for their rights and showing that they have so much to offer the world. This woman encourages the audience to be a good example and make positive impacts on the world around you so in the future when your daughter asks what you did in this past year you will be proud to answer. This poem was very inspiring and caused me to reflect on all the good things that happened in 2016 and try to make 2017 even better. Her poem isn't just about how a mother addresses the past to her child, it is based on the message of doing good things in your life so you can be an example to others. This video taught me how I should try to make a difference in my community and be proud of who I am as a person.

    1. I watched this video because of the title "What would you tell your daughters about 2016?". I felt the same inspiration you talk about in your post, Sydney. Chinaka Hodge is an amazing presenter. She speaks strongly with her words. Anyone who watches this video can tell she truly means what she writes. I loved watching this mesmerizing video.

    2. I completely agree with your view on this inspiring poem by Chinaka Hodge. How she tells the world about women in 2016 is truly interesting. Her words are powerful and her emotions are even stronger. It shows that, even though women have had to have fight for a while, they can proudly tell their daughters "I helped." Chinaka is an inspiring woman and makes us have faith in the next generation of girls.

  7. The video I chose was about Caroline Paul and how she grew up to be a brave women. She was able to get outside her comfort zone and finding confidence in her self. She had thought she had been failing due to the incomplete record result. She talked about how its not the fear that is holding you back but its the idea of it being pro-bravery. Caroline talked about that we are raising our girls to be timid and not letting them take risks. But this is a con because the fear of trying stays with them. She suggests that girls should take risks and do risky-play because it teaches confidence. With he result of this they learn life lessons.

    1. I completely agree with you Ariana. Caroline Paul talked about an important issue of girls and how they often lack confidence in what they do, part of the reason being because they never learned to be confident. Today and in past years, people usually caution girls in activities they would promote in boys, but never really realize the long term effect of doing that. Making girls fearful of things that might be risky during their childhood is more likely to make them not want to take risks when they grow up. Taking away these moments prevents girls from feeling all the anxiousness, happiness, and pride life has to offer.

  9. https://www.ted.com/talks/deeyah_khan_what_we_don_t_know_about_europe_s_muslim_kids#t-1009278

The video I looked at by Deeyah Khan was called: What we don't know about Europe's Muslim kids. Deeyah Khan was born to a Pakastani dad and Afghan mother and grew up in Norway. In the video, she discussed how at a young age her father told her the only way she was going to make it in life because of her skin color was to be famous. So she started singing and continued that for many years, but she soon started facing ridicule from conventional Islamic men. She received death threats and hate that got so bad that she had to move to England at age 17. Though when she got there, she received the same treatment. She talks about how she was publicly humiliated because of her race, and how nobody stood up for her. She talks about how radical extremist terrorist groups feed off the powerless that are ousted by their family, and make them feel important. She wants everyone to stand up for Muslim kids, especially in Europe. You should watch this video because it was very interesting and Khan brought up points that really changed my point of view and showed a unique insight.

    1. This really is a very very interesting video. Its terrible how she was ridiculed by her own people and others when she was just a child. This video gives a different point of view especially when it comes to terrorism. Its so sad how these poor kids and teenagers are being rejected by their family and their own people. All kids teenagers whether they are muslim or not they deserve love. And its so sad how desperate for love they could get, that they would go as far as becoming a terrorist.

  10. https://www.ted.com/talks/andrew_pelling_this_scientist_makes_ears_out_of_apples

The ted talk I chose was about making ears out of apples. At first I didn't believe it but when the talker, Andrew Pelling showed us evidence that this method could actually be a breakthrough for science, I was shocked. In the ted talk, Andrew was able to talk about his story, on how it all started by him collecting people garbage to start building his own kind of robots. He was able to throw a couple jokes at the audience and he also kept his presentation brief, short and straight to the topic. he added visual pictures in his presentation to keep the audience's attention to his powerpoint. He tells us how a majority of vegetables ( etc celery ) and fruits ( etc apples) can be used as body parts in surgical procedures. Meaning that there will be a new, cheaper and more economic way to have surgeries.

    1. This video was really cool. The guy basically spoke about how one day we can maybe use common kitchen/household items to replace body parts in humans. I feel like this could positively affect our world, and could be expanded on to create new science breakthroughs. I agree that his presentation was really well put together, I wasn't ever bored wth the video. I think this is a great idea, and it will go far to help people in the world.

The video I watched was called "To Raise Brave Girls, Encourage Adventure". I was really drawn in because the gender gap and behavior of the specific gender is really true. People want girls to be frigid and be less risk taking. But its society to blame and the parents for instilling these concepts into their children. The fact that Caroline had that experience as a firefighter says a lot about how society has evolved. She says that by teaching girls at a young age to be courageous that things could change. Teaching it at a young a young age could resolve the gender stereotype.

    1. the video takes a great look at gender and gender stereotyping. how we raise our girls shows in how they grow up, being shy or outgoing. society takes our girls as shy and not outgoing mostly and i find what caroline says to help change this is very helpful.

    2. This video just shows you how gender is looked at. Girls should be able to take risks and try to make their dreams come true. But, they are expected to stay in a comfort zone. If adults and parents teach these girls that they can do anything they want, they will think they can. They need to be courageous and follow their hearts.

  12. https://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity

The Ted talk I watched was by Ken Robinson. It was titled "is education killing creativity." I found the way he exlplained his points and how he presented himself was very entertaining. Ken talks about how schools put English and Math on the top of the hierarchy of education. He also makes a point that at the bottom of this hierarchy is music and art. He also said most educators don't provide dance as a class. He said we all have bodies why shouldn't we all be able to dance. Throughout his presentation Ken he tells jokes and tell personnal stories that made you laugh. They way he delivered and kept the people entertained was impressive. I really liked his presentation because it made me think. Some of his points really made sense. I do now believe education is killing creativity.

  13. https://www.ted.com/talks/magda_sayeg_how_yarn_bombing_grew_into_a_worldwide_movement#t-380737

The video I watched is called "How Yarn bombing Turned into a Worldwide Movement". I chose this video because it seemed the most interesting. In the video Magda Sayeg talks about how she came up with the whole yarn bombing concept. She also mentions how it able to spread so quickly, allowing herself to communicate with others without using words. I think other people should watch this video because it may inspire them to do something like this.

    1. I completely agree with your comment that Magda's work is very inspiring because knitting started out as something she did for fun and after sharing it on social media it became her lives work as an artist. One part I particularly found memorable was at end of her speech when she talked about how as people we have many hidden talents and if we are lucky enough to figure them out they can greatly change our lives for the better. Personally, Magda's speech really made me question if my constant use technological devices is keeping myself from finding out what my hidden talents are physically and artistically. As teenagers we spend so much time on our phones that we don't spend as much time playing sports or pursuing hobbies such as drawing or knitting that we could be talented at doing. This is a great video and her words are truly intriguing.

    2. I agree that Magda's yarn bombing is very inspiring because she turned a thing that she liked to do, and turned it into a national phenomenon. I liked how she challenged herself every time she covered something in yarn, like the city bus. I also found it inspiring when she said that everyone had hidden talents that are waiting to be freed.

The video I chose was called "What you need to know about CRISPR." I chose this video because genetic engineering is very interesting to me. In the video, Ellen Jorgensen talks about the new genome editing technology named CRISPR. By using CRISPR, scientists are able to edit genomes by attacking the DNA's second line of defense, tricking it to let the edited genome into the double helix strand. This technology will allow scientists to do things such as insert certain edited genomes into a person with leukemia that will cure them. I encourage other people to watch this video because it proves that genetic engineering isn't something just a futuristic or sci-fi idea, but something that now exists.

  15. This video I chose was called "Your smartphone is a civil rights issue". I chose this video because it sounded interesting. I wanted to find out more about the smartphones in our world today. In this video they were talking about how the iPhone has more security by default. They also said that the android is not encrypted by default and that the government and hackers could more easily get data off that phone. IPhone's are safe to the owners and everyone else is locked out. This was interesting because I found out just how secure some smartphones really are.
