Why no cell phones in school policy?

Let's start a discussion with why from a professional's point of view.

Simon Sinek is a marketing expert and motivational speaker. In this recent talk he discussed the issues about mobile technologies and their impact on generations of people having grown up on them.

For our conversation let's consider what happens during the stages of adolescence...

So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one or two elements of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying...discuss your opinion in a few coherent sentences. Do not copy my example.

  1. During Middle Adolescence, your body continues to change and you have worries about being normal. Because of this I don't think we should have phones in school. Being able to access social media will give you more insecurities, while in school. This will lead to distractions during learning. Another reason would be because of cyber bulling. Cyber bullying enhances peoples insecurities about their body, and the friends they hang out with.

  2. During Early Adolescence, one becomes more interested in privacy. Thus meaning, the adolescent will want to hide stuff from their parents or guardian. Henceforth, I believe that phones should not be used in school during this stage of life. The child may want to hide things from parents or teachers, which may result in trouble.

  3. During middle adolescence, your changing both physically and emotionally. While you are in the classroom you are suppose to be engaging in the conversation in class. If you are on your phone using social media, it starts becoming a distraction and can impact you current grade average. You also question life and become more worried about how others see you.

  4. During middle adolescence, there is a growth of abstract thought. While you are in class, working on the assignment your teacher gave you, having access to your phone might be dangerous to your work. It would make you distracted.

  5. Having access to your your phone during school is a ad idea. Throughout the chart it shows how in middle adolescence kids struggle with their identity and they are more focused on the present. Having access on the phone may effect the kids greatly. It can distract them from the task. But it also could be dangerous because they may post something idiotic on social media to impress their peers. This is why having access to phones is a bad idea.

  6. While people are middle adolescence, they are influenced easily by the culture around them. During this time, their phone, with the social media, will influence them in a possibly bad way. School would be more important, so phones should not be used in school.

  7. During Early Adolescence a child should not use a phone during school. They are rule and limit testing which means that they might use their phones for something other than school. Since they have a struggle sense of identity they would try to find their identity on social media which means they might not be paying attention during class.

  8. In early adolescence, a child is going through social changes and wants to see where they fit in the world. So they want to get on social media and may take advantage of it while in school. Even if they wouldn't want to they would do it anyway because of peer pressure. So they should not be able to use their phones in school.

  9. During middle adolescence, children tend to have a deeper interest in finding moral reasoning for topics and problems in their society. Students this age should be allowed to use their phones in school to be able to research more about about certain topics that were covered in class that they want to learn more about. Many students in schools today do not have their own technological devices appropriate to use in school so the only way they would be able to do this research is to on their phones. Therefore I believe phones should be allowed to be used in school as long as they are being used for school work and researching to learn more about a certain topic.

  11. During middle adolescence, teenagers worry about being "normal". Phones should not be allowed in school because these kids can be persuaded into doing something stupid that they might regret. By not using phones in school, this can ensure that that wouldn't happen.

  12. During middle and early adolescence, kids worry about being popular and independence by checking or using our phone during class or posting stuff during the school day. This shows other kids that " Oh yeah, I'm in class and I'm still posting stuff or texting people and no matter what I'll still pass #scholar" but in reality it doesn't mean that. I think we shouldn't have phones allowed in school unless it's a free period because during class your full and undivided attention should be to the teacher and not worried about a text from your crush or friends. During the moment your texting, the teacher could've said something very important but due to a text you missed it.

  13. During middle adolescence, our body is still changing and we're starting to worry more about our appearance and how our peers think about us. This can lead to cyber bullying, which is a con of the ability to use our phone during school. But since we worry so much about our popularity and what other people think, we also need to use our phones. To "keep up" with the latest news and trends. So being able to use our phones during school has both pros and cons.

  14. During early and middle adolescence, teens go through multiple changes both emotionally and physically. Phones promote ways for teens to get distracted, they use them to check social medias and play games instead of focusing during class. Phones can also become addictive, therefore students can't take their eyes off them. Teens often feel insecure and unsure of themselves, not knowing their identity so they look to social media. That's why phones shouldn't be allowed in school, it causes distractions and students sometimes lose them.

  15. During early adolescence, people have deeper moral thinking. Although administration may disagree, they should be allowed to have their phones with them in class. Some adolecents may 'think' that using their phones in class is morally okay and taking their phone would be thinking for them. Adolescents will learn what is morally okay and what is not eventually but not allowing them to think for themselves will only make it harder later on to judge situations morally.

  16. During early adolescence, people want to be able to rely on their friends more. Also, people might want to be popular and only care about that. I feel that students shouldn't be able to use their phones in school. This is because then they are forced to talk and they can have a more meaningful friendship. Not only that, but then people wouldn't be as worried about being popular because they won't have to worry about posting anything or snap-chatting anyone.
